Some thoughts of The Tale Of Despereaux
The Tale Of Despereaux
Despereaux, a little fearless mouse with big ears, attempts to teach the mice of his town not to be afraid of the outside world. Despereaux befriends a human princess in the process. 3
Fortunately, this special mouse lives. He hears sounds that no one else can hear and he’s able to read. These two special talents, the reader finds, can be dangerous for a mouse. One day Despereaux stumbles upon King Phillip and his daughter, Princess Pea. The mouse is drawn to the music the king plays for his daughter and soon finds himself talking — and falling in love — with the Princess. 2

Kate DiCamillo is a relative newcomer in children’s literature. Her first novel Because of Winn-Dixie was a Newbery Honor book in 2001, and was followed by The Tiger Rising later that year. The Tale of Despereaux is an intriguing book, hinting at sequels — and also, it would seem, written with an eye toward Hollywood. It’s an animator’s dream, and shows the influence (among other things) of the 1950 Disney Cinderella. Let’s hope that any eventual movie can convey the disquieting energy of DiCamillo’s novel. 6
The trailer for Universal’s The Tale of Despereaux is now online. Kate Dicamillo is a genius, and she also wrote The Tiger Rising, Because of Win-Dixie and more. So in the end, does Despereaux save Princess Pea, does Chiaroscuro get his world of light he desires? As a reader, it is your destiny to find out. 5
