Some thoughts of Mini S First Time
Mini S First Time
Nikki Reed is no longer the messed-up young girl from Thirteen, the breakthrough film which she co-authored with director Catherine Hardwicke, based on her own slippery-slope experiences of an emancipated adolescence. Of course, she never really was that girl, as she?s quick to point out. 3
Desperate to be free from her drunken, unloving mother Diane, the beautiful, scheming young Mini seduces her stepfather Martin and soon convinces him to join her in a sadistic scheme to have Diane declared insane. But their conspiracy soon escalates to murder and when John Garson, a young detective, starts investigating, Martin and Mini begin to turn on each other. 2

Mini?s First Time was a fun movie with a biting sense of humor very similar to last year?s Pretty Persuasion, but it never fully develops into the movie it should?ve been. Remember guys, there?s nothing more dangerous and manipulative than a beautiful woman scorned. With such a lousy mother, Mini has been forced to raise herself, and the result is a manipulative wild-child who won?t let anyone or anything stand in her way of being happy. The performances are okay but none of the actors? Reed?s got the goods but she might want to think about playing a different type of character her next time out. She?s better than a one-trick pony. If there?s any reason to give Mini?s First Time an out-and-out recommendation, it?s the Goldblum/Baldwin fight scene which is pretty awesomely over-the-top. 6
First-time director Nick Guthe, a graduate from Princeton and a Brooklyn native, releases his first feature film this weekend titled ?Mini?s First Time.? ?Mini?s First Time,? a dark comedic drama, stars Nikki Reed as Mini, a troubled, young, rebellious girl living in a wealthy community in southern California. Having a drug induced mother (Carrie-Anne Moss) and an apathetic father, Mini decides to do something wild a become an escort for some wild nights. But when she meets her unexpected first customer, she travels down a dangerous path of lies and deceit as she tries to prolong the fun. 1
Not that the character of Mini is overly motivated by financial windfalls or murder. As played by the centerfold-ready Nikki Reed, she?s the spoiled spawn of a failed Hollywood marriage, living under the tony roof of an alcoholic mom (Carrie-Anne Moss) and a detached corporate honcho stepfather (Alec Baldwin). Writer-director Nick Guthe infuses these love-deprived characters with an awareness of the conscience and compassion that wafts between the lines in and around Beverly Hills, where materialism and gluttony and a pricey coiffure determine your worth. 5
Other than Thirteen, the best showcase so far for Reed?s acting talents is arguably Nikki?s First Time, available on DVD. With a hollowed out conscience and eyes that are deep pools of unspoken emotional neediness, Reed plays the title character of a high school girl with a swallowed loathing for her embittered, gold-digging mother, a failed actress named Diane (Carrie-Anne Moss). Seeking ever-escalating thrills, Mini gets a job with an upscale escort service, where a fling lands her in the lap, literally, of her stepfather Martin (Alec Baldwin, in a role given perhaps unfortunate new spin by his recent real-life travails). 7
Greetings AICN, MiraJeff here with a look at not one but two, TWO Jeff Goldblum movies, the dark comedy Mini?s First Time and the mockumentary Pittsburgh. Regardless, Mini?s First Time is a star-studded indie from writer/director Nick Guthe. The titular Mini is a reckless teenager played by the reigning queen of reckless teenagers, Nikki Reed who co-wrote Thirteen at the same friggin? Mini is the spoiled brat spawn of Diane (Carrie-Anne Moss), her neglectful, alcoholic, Hollywood socialite mother who is spectacularly unfit for the job. Diane is married to Martin (Alec Baldwin), Mini?s step-father, thank God, because if he were blood-related then what happens next would be too weird to watch. 4
