Some thoughts of Michelle Yeoh

Michelle Yeoh

It’s fitting that they kick off a month of Michelle Yeoh and two months of Hong Kong films with this one. Heroic Trio is practically required viewing for people getting into the wonderful world of Hong Kong cinema. If they sold HK movie starter kits this one would without a doubt be in it. Well, it introduces the concept of butt-kicking female leads, features three of the circle’s leading ladies (Yeoh, Cheung and Mui are all superstars over there) and is filled oodles of wild, vibrant, almost stereotypical “Hong Kong style” action. 3

DATUK Michelle Yeoh is a most energetic and industrious personality who is never shy of hard-work. This year, the leading Asian actress features in three Hollywood movies including Escape from Huang Shi (known earlier as The Children of Huang Shi), yet she makes it a point to include projects that are close to her heart such as the global road safety campaign that takes up much of her time and energy. 2

Gracefully flitting between Hollywood and Hong Kong cinema, the 45-year-old Yeoh has the aura of one in total control. Dressed in skin-tight black leggings and top, and bedecked with silver jewellery, she seems much taller than her 5ft 4in, perhaps because her super-lean body looks like it could somersault over you at any given moment. Curiously, Yeoh has never had any formal training in martial arts. Her abilities stem from her time studying ballet in her youth, including a period at London’s Royal Academy of Dance. 6

Named Miss Malaysia in 1983, Michelle Yeoh went on to become one of Asia’s top film stars. Known for action films — and for performing her own stunts — Yeoh became a Hong Kong favorite after landing a role in Yes, Madam (1985). She conquered American audiences with her scene-stealing roles in Jackie Chan’s Supercop (1992) and the 1997 James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies. She was an even bigger hit alongside Chow Yun-Fat in the 2000 hit Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (directed by Ang Lee). 1

Although the film chronicles the world of Japanese geishas, it stars three actresses from the Chinese film world: Ziyi Zhang, who earned a Golden Globe nomination as best actress for her role as a geisha, Gong Li and Michelle Yeoh. Ms. Zhang and Ms. Li are two of China’s best-known actresses, and Ms. Yeoh is popular for her roles in China, though she was born in Malaysia. 5

Michelle Yeoh in a rather sexy (at least the last picture) spread for Player Magazine. Michelle has a big movie coming out in 2007, the Danny Boyle directed sci-fi “Sunshine”, in which she plays an astronaut who, along with other astronauts, are sent to re-ignite the sun in order to save the solar system. Seriously, couldn’t they just move? 7

Some of the most popular MichelleYeoh martial arts DVDs were made with several other beautiful women from Asia, including Anita Mui and Maggie Cheung. The Heroic Trio is a favorite of many Michelle Yeoh fans, as is Wing Chun and Wonder Seven, which were both released in 1994. 4
