Scientists say they are a step closer to developing materials that could render people and objects invisible. This feat is accomplished by using Metamaterials able to reroute light, forcing light around objects like water flowing around boulders in a stream. The waves of light come in and are swept around the cloak and reconstructed on the other side while avoiding the interior region, so it looks as if they just passed through free space. 3

For one thing, the scientists could use the metamaterial as a building block for a magnetic invisibility cloak. Such a cloak could hide magnetism by guiding an applied magnetic field around a cloaked region. 2

To get around this problem, Smolyaninov’s team confine light to two dimensions. “The new cloak doesn’t control the light you can see directly,” explains Ulf Leonhardt, a physicist at the University of St Andrews, UK. “It’s not the invisibility most people would imagine.” 6

Scientists at the University of California have announced they’ve developed metamaterials that can make people invisible. Before this, it was already possible to cloak two-dimensional objects, but this is the first demonstration of three-dimensional objects being rendered invisible by artificially engineered materials that redirect light around the objects. 1

But scientists are not satisfied. Using other new materials, some are trying to manufacture rudimentary Harry Potter-like cloaks that make objects inside of them literally invisible under the right conditions — the pinnacle of stealthy technology. 5

A superlens has a negative refractive index, meaning light that hits it reverses and goes in the opposite direction. Physicist John Pendry at Imperial College London was among the first to propose superlenses in 2000. 7

Starting with the discovery of the Van Allen radiation belts by the first U.S. satellite in 1958, scientists have known that the Earth is surrounded by a cloud of electrified gas. This cloud, called the magnetosphere, is constrained by Earth’s magnetic field, compressed by the solar wind to within about 100,000 km of the Earth on the sunward side, and drawn out by the solar wind to more than a million km on the night side. 4
