Some thoughts of Fly Me To The Moon

Fly Me To The Moon

The year is 1969 and like everyone else in the world, Nat (Trevor Gagnon) and his pals IQ (Philip Daniel Bolden) and Scooter (David Gore) are abuzz over the upcoming launch of the first manned mission to the moon. Inspired by his Grandpa?s (Christopher Lloyd) oft-told tale of hiding aboard Amelia Earhart?s plane during her famed solo cross-Atlantic flight, Nat hatches a secret plan for the three young flies to stow away on the Apollo 11 rocket. 3

In this groundbreaking 3-D animated adventure, three young flies set off on a courageous mission to become the first insects on the moon by hitching a ride on the historic Apollo 11 space flight. Based on the actual transcripts and the original blueprints from NASA, the film?s stunning visuals and meticulous attention to detail introduce a whole new generation to the awe-inspiring achievements of the space program?s most momentous mission. 2

Back on earth, Grandpa, Mom and the others watch TV to get news of their offspring?s adventure. As the astronauts appear on camera, the heroic flies wave in the background, visible to other flies but barely seen by humans ? One other problem: In far-away Russia, there are other flies watching TV - Russian flies that cannot tolerate American flies getting to the moon first. Mother Russia puts all its hopes of success on the back of one nasty operative named Yegor. Fortunately, a pretty Russian fly named Nadia also sees the flies on board and hears Nat calling out his Grandpa?s name, the very name of the fly Nadia met in Paris and loved so many years ago. 6

You have not seen a film until you have seen this one. Sure the story is predictable. They go to the moon and they come back. That’s probably why nobody ever made a film about the Apollo 11 mission. The fly-on-the-wall concept totally works though. The flies are adorable. Real emotions in a computer animated film, that’s a novelty! The animation and the sets are first rate. It may not have the finishing touch of a Pixar movie, yet in many ways this film is as groundbreaking as Toy Story 10 years ago. Best of all it was great fun, a truly unique experience for the whole family! 1

After a difficult lunar landing, Nat tags along with Neil Armstrong on his legendary moon walk. Although the flies face a few more close calls, the mission appears to be a success. At least until Grandpa?s old flame Nadia (Nicolette Sheridan) arrives from Russia to warn him that her government, angry over losing the space race, has dispatched fly-spy Yegor (Tim Curry) to Cape Canaveral to sabotage the computer flight plans. With the Apollo hurtling toward Earth, it falls to Nat?s family to save the mission?and the trio of brave flies?from disaster. 5

Speaking of which, Moon’s storytelling and characters lack the refreshing originality you’d find in any Pixar feature, but it makes up for it in the clean, detailed animation and some whimsical moments (those young maggots are the most fun). Bright and colorful, the highlight of the film is the detailed recreation of the moon landing, and astronauts Buzz Aldrin (who makes an appearance at the end of the movie) and Neil Armstrong should be happy with their animated CG versions. One drawback, though: human movements are stiff and slow, far less so than the real stars of Moon - the flies. 7

Since the release of Chicken Little in 2005, 3D films have been slowly breaking into the mainstream film market. Chronicling the Apollo 11 moon mission, the animated children’s movie follows three young flies who hitchhike into space alongside legendary astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, who also lent his voice to the project. 4
