Some thoughts of Evan Bayh
Evan Bayh
UPDATE (8.4.2008): Obama is scheduled to be in Indiana on Wednesday and will be meeting with Evan Bayh. There is a great deal of speculation that he will announce Bayh as his running mate at that time. The general consensus is that they want to make the announcement before Friday so that the news doesn’t get overshadowed by the Olympics. 3
He created a chart to examine how well the voting habits of sitting senators (liberal, moderate, or conservative) matches the political persuasions of the states they are from. Turns out that Bayh, a Democrat from conservative Indiana, is more liberal that Ben Nelson, for example, a Democrat from conservative Nebraska. He’s also more liberal than Tim Johnson, a Democrat from conservative South Dakota. In fact, says Silver, “there is no senator more liberal than Bayh in any state more conservative than Indiana.” 2

Bayh, a relative unknown on the national stage, faced an uphill fight given the likely shape of the Democratic field. Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.), perhaps the nation’s most popular politician at the moment, appears increasingly likely to run, as does Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.). Both politicians are well known nationally and would probably raise $50 million or more to secure the Democratic nomination. Edwards has shown considerable strength in Iowa, the home of the first-in-the-nation presidential caucuses. 6

Unlike Feingold, Bayh voted for the Iraq war. This, obviously, conflicts with Barack Obama’s principled opposition to the war, and makes him a difficult fit on the ticket. If, as Obama has said, he really wants an independent Washington outsider, Bayh would not be your choice. His father, Birch Bayh, was a senator from Indiana for almost 20 years. 5
Evan Bayh is viewed by many as Obama’s ideal vice-presidential complement. The Indiana senator is understated in demeanor, enjoys an easy rapport with Midwestern crossover conservatives and has strong ties to both Clintons. 7
Barack Obama was at Perdue University in Indiana today to discuss national security issues. The Q&A foused much more on his choice of a running mate than on national security. The fact that he chose to have this forum in Indiana and to include Sam Nunn of Georgia and Evan Bayh of Indiana, both on the short list of potential vice presidential choices, only fueled the speculation. 4
